As a Nutrition Coach, I’ve seen first-hand how medications like Mounjaro for weight loss can be a lifeline for women carrying excess weight – especially in midlife, when menopause can make losing weight feel harder than ever. But the real challenge often begins when it’s time to stop. With more and more women in particular turning to these treatments, I’ve become increasingly concerned about what happens next. That’s why it’s encouraging to see this issue gaining attention in the media and from NICE this month.
Why Support is Recommended to Maintain Results After Mounjaro for Weight Loss
A recent article published by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) highlights a growing concern: many people regain up to two-thirds of the weight they lost once they stop taking these medications. The organisation now recommends that anyone coming off weight loss jabs, like Mounjaro or Wegovy, should receive structured support for at least a year. Why? Because successful weight management doesn’t end when the medication does. The transition period is crucial, and without a plan, old habits can creep back in.

Why a Sustainable, Balanced Nutrition Plan Is Essential
Coming off weight loss medication is not just about willpower – it’s about giving your body the nourishment and structure it needs to thrive. Here’s what I recommend to my clients, drawing on both the latest research and my own experience:
Focus on Nutrient-dense Foods
After appetite-suppressing medication, it may be tempting to fall back into old eating patterns, especially if you lack of knowledge around what constitutes 'good nutrition'. Instead, prioritise whole grains, lean proteins, colourful fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts. These foods keep you fuller for longer and support your energy levels.
Control Portions and Eat Regularly
Your metabolism may have slowed, especially during menopause. Eating regular, balanced meals and being mindful of portion sizes can help prevent overeating and keep your blood sugar stable.
Don’t Fear Carbs, Choose Wisely
Opt for low glycaemic index carbohydrates such as oats, sweet potatoes, quinoa and brown rice. These help maintain steady energy and reduce cravings.
Prioritise Protein
Protein is your friend for maintaining muscle mass and feeling satisfied. Include a 30 gram portion of protein at every meal and snack – think eggs, fish, chicken, beans, hummus or Greek yoghurt.
Stay Hydrated
Sometimes, what feels like hunger is actually thirst. Keep a water bottle handy and aim for at least 1.5-2 litres a day.
Plan Ahead
Batch cooking, simple recipes, and healthy snacks on hand make it easier to stick to your plan, especially on busy days.
Allow for Enjoyment and Flexibility
A sustainable nutrition plan isn’t about deprivation. Enjoy your favourite foods in moderation and listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

Support Makes All the Difference
NICE stress the importance of ongoing support – whether from a nutrition coach, health professional, or family and friends. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, especially for women in midlife who are juggling hormonal changes, busy lives, and unique health needs.
My Approach: Compassionate, Personalised Guidance
I work with clients who are struggling with stubborn menopause weight gain, managing a pre-/Type 2 diabetes diagnosis or planning to come off weight loss jabs, to build confidence in their food choices and create habits that last. Together, we focus on nourishment, not restriction, and on building a positive relationship with food.
If you’re transitioning off medication and want to avoid the yo-yo cycle, know that you’re not alone – and that with the right plan, you can maintain your progress and feel your best.

Final Thoughts
Coming off weight loss medication is a new chapter, not the end of your journey. With a balanced nutrition plan, practical strategies, and the right support, you can protect your health and enjoy lasting results.
